In my first year at Cambridge, I became convinced that I would not be able to find any sort of proper leftist circle while at uni. Some lecture materials were getting ‘trigger warnings’, Linda Bellos was no-platformed, the identity politics hysteria reached the curriculum and figures like Weber and Marx were characterized as “dead white men”. Moreover, I was saddened to see that roles which were created to protect the interests of historically marginalized people became available to anyone who identified as a member of such groups (yes, now it isn’t just women, but BME, sometimes even working class, etc. have all became identities to claim individually, instead of collectively). Sigh..
